The Vesper Cordless Lantern runs on a battery, so it goes wherever the evening does. A high transparency crystal column sits inside a squared metal carry frame, lit from a disc at its base and from a slim amber filament suspended down the centre. The glow collects in the column and reads like a candle held in glass.
The frame and base are solid metal with a brushed finish, machined with fine rings cut around the base. It has real weight to it when you pick it up, and the crystal column passes light cleanly rather than clouding it, so the filament inside stays visible and the glow stays warm and sharp.
The touch control is hidden in the base, with no switch or knob anywhere on the outside. A single press cycles three colour temperatures: warm 3000K, warm white 4500K and white 6000K. Press and hold and the brightness runs stepless from a low glow all the way up to full, so you set it exactly where you want it instead of choosing between fixed steps.
The built-in battery charges over USB Type-C and then runs with no cable at all. It is light enough to carry in one hand, so it works on a dinner table, a bedside table, a bar, or outside on a dry evening.

The glow comes from a disc at the bottom of the cylinder rather than a bulb you can see, so the whole tube fills with light. Closer to a candle in a glass than a lamp.
Silicone ring underneath means it grips the table instead of sliding around.
The cordless part is not a novelty, it changes how you use it. Ours has been on a dinner table, a bedside table, a bathroom shelf during a bath and out on a covered porch, all in the same week. Once you have a light with no cable you realise how much a cable dictates where lights are allowed to live.
This has become the light we use most in the house, which I did not expect from something we bought as a bit of a novelty. It sits on the kitchen island in the evening, moves to the table for dinner, and ends up on a bedside table at night. One light, three rooms, no cable.
Very happy with it with one honest note. The body is ABS with a brushed metallic finish rather than machined metal. It is well done, the finish is convincing and the base has enough weight to feel planted, but if you pick it up expecting cold aluminium you will notice. For a lamp designed to be carried around I actually think the lighter material is the right choice.
Dims beautifully low.
We have three of these now running down the length of a dining table and they have replaced candles completely. The light quality is the thing. Because it comes from a disc at the bottom of a clear cylinder rather than from a visible bulb, the whole tube fills with a soft amber that behaves much more like a flame than a lamp does. On the lowest setting it is genuinely candle bright, and nobody has to think about wax or smoke or open flame.
Prettier than a candle and no wax.
Stepless dimming from five to a hundred percent is the specification that matters and it delivers. Press and hold and the brightness slides smoothly in both directions, so you land exactly where you want rather than choosing between three settings that are all slightly wrong. Combined with the three colour temperatures it covers everything from a dim dinner to actually seeing what you are doing.
Have one on the nightstand and it has replaced the bedside lamp entirely. Being able to run it down to almost nothing means I can leave it on without it keeping anyone awake.
I was sceptical about battery life on something this small and it has been fine. Running it at around a quarter brightness in the evening we get most of a week before it needs charging, and it charges over ordinary USB so it just goes on the same cable as the phone overnight.
The three finishes are genuinely different rather than the same lamp in three shades. The brass is warm and soft, the graphite is properly dark and almost disappears into a dim room, and the nickel is a cool pale silver. We ended up with brass in the dining room and graphite in the bedroom and they suit those rooms completely differently.
No cable is the entire point. It goes from the table to the bedside to the porch and back.

Took it out onto a covered patio for a summer dinner and it was perfect. No extension lead, no hunting for an outdoor socket, just carry it out and put it down.
The vertical amber filament inside the cylinder is a lovely detail. It gives the light a bit of structure rather than being a flat glow, and it catches the eye the way a flame does.
Charge lasts several evenings at the low setting, less if you run it bright.
Battery life has been better than I expected. On the low warm setting we get several evenings out of one charge, and it charges over USB from the same cable as everything else in the house.
Really nice light and the build is better than expected. Worth knowing the body is a coated ABS rather than solid metal. It looks and feels metallic, and it means you can pick it up one handed without thinking, but do not expect the heft of machined aluminium.
It is genuinely small, about the footprint of a large coffee mug, which is why it works on a laid table. Anything bigger would be in the way of the food and the conversation. The size is the design decision that makes it good.
Good lamp. The colour temperature button and the dimming are the same control, so there is a short press and a long press to learn. Took me a minute and now it is second nature.
Attractive lamp and the low setting is lovely. Mine runs down faster than I hoped if I use it at full brightness, so it lives on the low setting most of the time. That is genuinely where it looks best anyway.
The warm colour setting is the one. Amber and soft, exactly like candlelight.

Nice piece and it does what it says. My only note is that at full brightness the battery goes considerably faster than at low, which is obvious in hindsight but worth planning for if you want it bright all evening.
Good product and it arrived quickly and well protected. The lamp is smaller than the listing photos suggested to me, around seven inches, which turned out to be fine and actually better for a table, but do measure if you were imagining something larger.

Bought the graphite for a darker room and it disappears completely when it is off, then the cylinder lights up and it is the only thing you look at. Really effective.
Ordered the brass and it is a soft warm gold rather than a shiny yellow. Sits well with oak and walnut and does not look like cheap plated metal.
The squared frame around the cylinder is what gives it the character. Most cordless lamps are just a glowing blob on a base, and this one actually looks like an object someone designed.
We bought these to replace candles at the dinner table and they have completely taken over. Same warm low light, no smoke, no wax, and nobody has to watch them around the kids. On the lowest setting it is almost exactly candle brightness.
Bought one to try and immediately ordered two more. What sold me was that it looks good switched off, which is not true of most portable lamps. The squared frame and the clear cylinder read as a considered object during the day rather than as a gadget waiting to be used.
